Channels for dialogue with Russia still exist, says German government
First Deputy Spokesperson Christiane Hoffmann recalled that French President Emmanuel Macron had a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin and said that this would continue
BERLIN, March 2. /TASS/. In the light of the events in Ukraine there are channels for dialogue with Moscow. The talks between French President Emmanuel Macron and Russian leader Vladimir Putin prove this, First Deputy Spokesperson of the Federal Government Christiane Hoffmann said at a briefing on Wednesday.
"We have to accept the situation as it is," Hoffmann said. Focusing on the possibility of a dialogue between the German authorities and the Russian leadership she debunked the assumption that it is "not supported at all." "The French president [Emmanuel Macron] had a phone conversation with [Russian President Vladimir] Putin and said that this would continue. So, there are channels for dialogue," the deputy spokesperson stressed that Berlin will continue to undertake diplomatic efforts.
In the meantime, Hoffmann pointed out that Berlin is "ready for all developments" of the situation.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a televised address on February 24 that in response to a request by the leaders of the Donbass republics he had made a decision to carry out a special military operation. The Russian head of state stressed that Moscow had no plans of occupying Ukrainian territories.
Russia’s Defense Ministry reported that Russian troops were not delivering strikes against Ukrainian cities. It emphasized that Ukrainian military infrastructure was being destroyed through the use of precision weapons. Civilians are not threatened, the Russian military assured.
