UN likely to adopt Cybercrime Treaty in 2023, says UNGA president

Abdulla Shahid pointed out that cyber threats posed a major challenge to the national security of countries all over the world

UNITED NATIONS, October 21. / TASS /. The UN General Assembly plans to adopt the Cybercrime Treaty in 2023, President of the 76th UN General Assembly session Abdulla Shahid told TASS on Wednesday.

"The draft convention is to be submitted to the 78th session of the General Assembly in 2023. I think the countries should [come] together and frankly discuss what needs to be done so that this Convention is ready for adoption by 2023 and so that we have international standards and rules to regulate this important area," the UNGA president noted.

Shahid pointed out that cyber threats posed a major challenge to the national security of countries all over the world. "Every effort needs to be made to bring countries together," he noted.

Among other threats to global peace and security, the UNGA president mentioned terrorism. "Like a pandemic, terrorism knows no boundaries. It has nothing to do with religion. The UN General Assembly adopted in 2006 the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, which has to be reviewed every two years. It is important that all countries implement this Strategy into national plans," Shahid said.
