Russia, Turkey interested in complete extermination of terrorism in Syria — Lavrov

ANTALYA, June 30. /TASS/. Moscow and Turkey are interested in complete extermination of terrorism in Syria and stress the importance of humanitarian assistance to all Syrians, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday after talks with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu.

"We spoke for complete extermination of terrorism on the Syrian territory, stressed the importance of all-round humanitarian assistance to all Syrians without any exceptions," he said.

According to Lavrov, the sides agreed to "continue to contribute to the resolution of tasks set forth by the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254" and confirmed "the topicality of steps to boost the efficiency of the Constitutional Committee," including as part of preparations for the sixth session of its editorial commission. "We will focus special attention on these and other issues during the next international meeting on Syria [in the Astana format], which is to be held next month in Nur-Sultan," he stressed.

He also said that the Libyan crisis was also discussed during the talks. The sides, in his words, reiterated their commitment to the efforts towards its soonest resolution by peaceful means and "under the United Nations’ auspices". "We expressed readiness to help [Libya’s] new power bodies that were formed in March to organize a constitutional referendum and general elections scheduled for December 24, 2021," Lavrov added.
