German chancellor welcomes Russia-US summit in Geneva

German Chancellor thinks the ccountries should keep open the channels for a dialogue, clearly identify their positions and interests and then see what corridors appear for the decisions

BERLIN, June 23./TASS/. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Wednesday that she welcomed the summit meeting between the Russian and US presidents, Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden, held in Geneva on June 16.

"I think that we have found [with the US] a common basis not only to identify geopolitical challenges but also to coordinate joint actions. This concerns Russia, this concerns China, as well as the issues of what alliances we can create, and what our interests are," Angela Merkel told a news conference ahead of talks with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Berlin.

"We will continue this exchange of opinions, of course, in the light of the conversation between President [of the US Joe] Biden and Russian President [Vladimir Putin]," the chancellor said. "I welcome very much the fact that the conversation did take place, as well as the talks [of the US] with Chinese leadership in Alaska," she stressed.

"I think that for all the differences, we need to keep open the channels for a dialogue, clearly identify our positions and interests and then see what corridors appear for the decisions," the chancellor added.
