US aims to establish control of Asia-Pacific region, says Russian top brass

The United States views that region as a scene for the rivalry of great powers, Admiral Igor Kostyukov noted

MOSCOW, June 23. /TASS/. The US’ confrontational course can clearly be seen in Asia and the Pacific as Washington aims to establish control of that region, Chief of the Russian General Staff’s Main Department Admiral Igor Kostyukov said at the Moscow Conference on International Security on Wednesday.

"The US’ confrontational course is fully manifesting itself in the Asia-Pacific region, which is turning into the engine of world trade," the Russian defense official said.

The United States views that region in its Global Trends 2040 medium-term report on geopolitical developments as a scene for the rivalry of great powers, the admiral stressed.

"The United States aims to establish control of that region of the world, which accounts for 60% of global GDP and up to 45% of world trade," Kostyukov said.

The Moscow Conference on International Security has been held annually since 2012 under the auspices of the Defense Ministry of Russia. The forum consistently strengthens its role as a reputable venue for discussing the most pressing issues of international security and traditionally evokes great interest both in Russia and abroad.
