Turkish, Russian foreign ministers focus on Jerusalem tensions in phone call - source

According to the source, Mevlut Cavusoglu and Sergey Lavrov also "discussed those issues with the foreign ministers of Iran, Pakistan and Algeria"

ANKARA, May 10. /TASS/. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov held talks on the phone on Monday, a source at the Turkish Foreign Ministry told TASS.

"Our minister held phone talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. They discussed recent developments in Palestine and Jerusalem," the source said.

According to the source, Cavusoglu also "discussed those issues with the foreign ministers of Iran, Pakistan and Algeria."

Earlier, the Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned the Israeli police’s actions in Jerusalem.

Tensions in East Jerusalem started mounting since mid-April. On May 7, clashes between Israel’s border police and Palestinians broke out in two areas - near the Temple Mount and Sheikh Jarrah, where under the Israeli court’s ruling the forces are evicting several Arab families, triggering protests among local citizens and fierce clashes, which have been underway since late April.

On Friday, Palestine’s WAFA news agency reported that the most violent clashes took place near the Al-Aqsa Mosque, where rubber bullets, stun grenades and tear gas were used against the crowd by Israeli law enforcement officers. On Monday, the United Nations Security Council convenes a session to tackle the crisis following clashes between Palestinians and Israeli police officers in East Jerusalem.
