General Staff’s statement unconstitutional, Armenian Prosecutor General’s office says

Earlier on Thursday, the General Staff issued a statement saying that due to the current situation the Armed Forces demand the resignation of the prime minister and his government

YEREVAN, February 25. /TASS/. The Armenian Prosecutor General’s office has considered a statement by the General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces demanding resignation of the current prime minister as unconstitutional actions punishable by law. A corresponding statement was published on the agency’s website on Thursday.

"We warn that any initiation of an illegitimate unconstitutional process will be subject to the strictest legal evaluation and will be punished by law with all its severity and force. The February 25 statement of the General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces, its discussion and commentaries on public and social platforms, created preconditions for internal social, political destabilization in the republic. From the point of view of public safety, this may have catastrophic consequences and seriously threatens the supremacy of law and constitutional order," the statement said.

Therefore, according to the statement, the Armenian Prosecutor General’s office urges to remain within the framework of the country’s constitution, avoid irresponsible steps, refrain from any initiatives threatening the supremacy of law in the country, from illegitimate attempts to involve the armed forces in the processes outside of their constitutional functions, from any actions against the public order, from any acts forbidden by law; use common sense.

Earlier on Thursday, the General Staff of Armenia’s Armed Forces issued a statement saying that due to the current situation the Armed Forces demand the resignation of the prime minister and his government while warning to refrain from using force.
