Peru extends coronavirus quarantine until late February

According to the latest update, the country reports more than 1.9 million coronavirus cases

RIO DE JANEIRO, February 11. /TASS/. Peru’s government has extended the coronavirus quarantine for two more weeks, Andina News Agency reported on Wednesday citing Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez.

"Despite reports about certain improvements, an extremely risky situation remains in many parts of the country. With this in mind, the Cabinet has decided to extend for 14 days measures enforced in areas with high [epidemiological] risks," she was quoted as saying.

Quarantine measures that have been in place since late January in the capital city and nine departments will be in force in 32 provinces and 17 departments from Monday.

According to the latest update, the country reports more than 1.9 million coronavirus cases and more than 42,000 coronavirus-associated fatalities.

In mid-March 2020, Peru’s authorities declared an emergency situation and imposed a strict quarantine. Later, a curfew was imposed in the country. International air service was suspended from March to October. In May, the authorities began to lift the coronavirus lockdowns but people were strongly advised to observe sanitary rules and be cautious. Amid a new wave of the epidemic in late January, the government again imposed quarantine in the capital city and nine more regions.
