Georgia to get up to 30,000 doses of Pfizer vaccine in February - official

TBILISI, January 31. /TASS/. In February, Georgia will receive 29,250 doses of the vaccine against the novel coronavirus, produced by US company Pfizer, Deputy Health Minister Tamar Gabunia told reporters on Saturday.

"Today, the Health Ministry was officially notified that starting from mid-February and until the end of the month, the country will receive the first batch of 29,250 doses of the Pfizer vaccine. They are intended for healthcare workers," she said.

In her words, apart from Pfizer, her country also plans to purchase the coronavirus vaccine from AstraZeneca. During the initial stage, the vaccination campaign will be held in the capital Georgia and the cities of Batumi and Kutaisi.

During the first stage, Georgian authorities plan to vaccinate 20% of the country’s adult population, or 700,000 people. By September, 60% of Georgian residents are to be vaccinated in order to form herd immunity. In total, the country plans to purchase up to 4 million doses.

The first novel coronavirus patient in Georgia was detected on February 26. As of now, the country has recorded 257,632 cases on its territory, which amounts to 6.93% of the country’s population. A total of 248,537 patients have recovered and 3,159 died in Georgia so far.
