Belarus won’t ‘fall to its knees’ despite negative factors, Lukashenko claims
There is a lack of funds, and certain pressure from all sides, Lukashenko said
MINSK, January 22. /TASS/. Despite the uncertain situation in the global economy and the external pressure exerted at Minsk, Belarus will not "fall to its knees" anyway, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said, according to BelTA report.
"We do not know how the global economy will develop - [there is] a very big recession; we don’t know how the pandemic will unfold, which affects not only the human minds, but the economy as well; we don’t know how global processes will go on in the world - you see what turbulence happens even in the stronghold of democracy. […] We, of course, will not fall to our knees, this is certain, but we must take it all into account in development," Lukashenko said.
He added that the new year began in a situation of uncertainty.
"There is a lack of funds, and certain pressure from all sides: from the inside, and from the outside. We must mobilize everything we have and only then begin something new. We will proceed on this basis," the head of state said.
Previously, Lukashenko claimed that the authorities intend to respond to the protests by good economic figures, noting the certain economic successes achieved in 2020. In particular, according to the president, agriculture displayed a 5% in all indicators, while industrial production was at 99.3% of 2019 levels. Overall, Belarusian GDP receded in 2020 by 0.9%.
