Kazakhstan records over 1,100 daily coronavirus cases

The total case tally has reached 171,232

NUR-SULTAN, January 20. /TASS/. Kazakhstan’s doctors confirmed 1,134 new coronavirus cases in the past day, 135 more than a day earlier, and the total case tally reached 171,232, the government’s commission for preventing the coronavirus spread reported on Wednesday.

In the past eight days some 766-1,134 daily COVID-19 cases were registered. Some 0.9% of the Central Asian republic’s 18.8 mln population were infected. The coronavirus spread rate in the past eight days reached 1.2. A record high of 1,962 coronavirus cases were confirmed on July 9.

As many as 155,397 people have recovered, with 948 recoveries registered in the past 24 hours, according to the commission. The death toll has reached 2,423, climbing by seven in the past day.

As of January 13, as many as 5,942,556 COVID-19 tests were carried out among 31.6% of the population. Some 2.8% of those who passed tests were infected.

On August 1, the Kazakh Health Ministry changed its method for counting coronavirus cases. Apart from confirmed COVID-19 patients, the data now includes patients diagnosed with pneumonia who test negative for the coronavirus but have symptoms similar to COVID-19. As many as 46,866 such cases and 542 deaths were recorded in the country as of January 19.

In late December 2020, the production of Russia’s coronavirus vaccine Sputnik V was launched at the Karagandinsky pharmaceutical facility. Some 2 mln doses of the vaccine are expected to be manufactured there. Mass vaccination with Sputnik V produced in Kazakhstan is due to begin in February. In March, the republic is preparing to start mass production of Kazakhstan’s QazCOVID-in vaccine.
