NUR-SULTAN, April 28. /TASS/. Four contenders for the post of Kazakhstan’s president started collecting signatures on Sunday following an approval from the country’s Central Election Commission (CEC), Deputy Chairman Konstantin Petrov said.
"Four contenders, whose compliance with the requirements was established by the CEC, are now collecting signatures for their support. They need to collect 118,140 valid signatures in at least 12 regions, cities of republican importance and the capital. Other candidates will be checked for compliance within the next few days," he said.
Apart from collecting the required number of signatures, the candidates will have to present a medical certificate and to make a report to local authorities about their income and property as of April 1.
Nine people have filed documents with Kazakhstan’s CEC to be registered as candidates for president at the June 9 elections by the time the deadline expired on Sunday. Four of them have already undergone the initial verification. They are incumbent President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev (nominated by the ruling Nur Otan party), member of the lower parliament house Daniya Yespayeva (nominated by the Ak Zhol party), trade union leader Amangeldy Taspikhov (Federation of Kazakh Trade Unions) and writer Sadybek Tugel (Uly Dala Kyrandary Republican Movement).
The candidates, who are still waiting for the CEC approval, are member of the lower parliament house Jambyl Akhmetbekov (nominated by the Communist People’s Party of Kazakhstan), board chairman of the National Agrarian Research and Educational Center Toleutai Rakhimbekov (representing the Auyl People’s Democtratic Patriotic Party), journalist Amirjan Kosanov (Ult Tagdyry National Patriotic Movement Association), Talgat Yergaliyev (Union of Builders of Kazakhstan association of legal entities), and Jumatai Aliyev (Khalyk Demografiyasy public association).
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev appointed early presidential elections on June 9. Nomination of candidates began on April 10 and ended on April 28. The registration of candidates will be over by May 11 to be followed by a canvassing stage till June 8.
