West turns a blind eye to 6 mln Ukrainians stripped of the right to vote, says politician

KIEV, April 23. /TASS/. Western countries have intentionally dismissed the fact that millions of Ukrainian nationals were stripped of the right to vote in Ukraine’s presidential election, the political council chief of Ukraine’s Opposition Platform - For Life party, Viktor Medvedchuk, said on Tuesday.
"The regime of [Ukrainian President Pyotr] Poroshenko, gambling only on ‘flag-waving’ voters, did its utmost to deprive more than six million fellow citizens of the possibility to vote in the presidential election," said a statement uploaded to the party’s website.
Medvedchuk specified that he was speaking about 2.5 million people living in certain areas of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions (the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics), 2.5 million to three million people earning a leaving in Russia and more than one million temporarily displaced persons, unable to vote as the authorities had not provided conditions for that.
The politician said that nevertheless the election had received high marks from the ambassadors of the G7 states, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the head of the European Parliament Election Observation Mission Rebecca Harms and observers from the Canadian non-governmental organization CANADEM.
"Unfortunately, the West has preferred to turn a blind eye to the violation of the constitutional rights of millions of Ukrainians, demonstrating double standards and selective approach. Thus it has once again proved that it is ready to sacrifice democratic principles for the sake of geopolitics," Medvedchuk said.
Earlier on Tuesday, the European Network of Election Monitoring Organizations (ENEMO) declared that the runoff election in Ukraine had been held in accordance with international standards despite certain violations.
Ukraine’s presidential runoff took place on April 21. The leader of the Servant of the People political party, Vladimir Zelensky, has won a landslide 73.22% of the vote in the runoff presidential election, the Central Election Commission announced on Tuesday after all 100% ballot papers had been counted.
