Death toll in Sri Lanka blasts exceeds 200 — media

A series of eight explosions hit the country during Easter celebrations

NEW DELHI, April 21. /TASS/. At least 207 people were killed in a series of eight blasts that hit Sri Lanka on Sunday, a local news portal Newsfirst reported citing local police.

Earlier reports said 190 people died and more than 500 others were wounded.

The authorities have imposed a curfew from 6 p.m., which will continue until special instructions. Access to social networks and messengers has been blocked.

A series of eight explosions in the island country during Easter celebrations on Sunday targeted churches, hotels and also an area close to the capital’s zoo and near Dematagoda, Colombo’s suburb. No extremist group has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Seven suspects have been detained in connection with the blasts. Earlier, police in Colombo confirmed that one of the blasts had been carried out by a suicide bomber, AFP reported. Media reports said radical Islamists could have been behind the deadly explosions.
