Russia warns Security Council members against meddling in Sudan’s internal affairs

THE UNITED NATIONS, April 17. /TASS/. Russia’s First Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dmitry Polyansky has warned members of the UN Security Council against interfering in Sudan’s domestic affairs.
On Wednesday, the United Nations Security Council held a session, discussing the current situation along the border between Sudan and South Sudan.
"Frankly speaking, we’ve got a strong impression after some of our colleagues’ speeches that they mistook today’s session first and foremost for a chance to discuss Sudan’s domestic situation," the Russian diplomat said.
"We do not think it is correct," he added.
Polyansky recalled that the UN Security Council "is not authorized to discuss the unfolding political processes in that country."
"It is crucial to avoid any statements and actions which might be interpreted as an interference in domestic affairs and we call on every colleague at the Council to take this into consideration," he underscored.
On April 11, Sudan’s military ousted President Omar al-Bashir who rose to power back in 1989. The coup was sparked off by lengthy mass protests amid a dire economic situation. The army disbanded the parliament, suspended the constitution and formed a Transitional Military Council to rule the country.
