The potential rise to power of comedian and frontrunning presidential candidate Vladimir Zelensky won’t generate any crucial changes in Ukraine, head of the Opposition Platform - for Life political party and member of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada (parliament) Vadim Rabinovich said.
"Should Vladimir Zelensky come to power, the only thing that will be changed is the elite," Rabinovich told NewsOne TV channel. "The Ukrainian president’s powers are limited, that’s why the new head of state won’t change anything."
According to the politician, the president doesn’t have much power in the country. "He can appoint the defense minister, the foreign minister and the prosecutor-general <...> All these are non-principal issues. He cannot create a coalition, he has nothing in the parliament. The new president won’t decide anything," he said.
Comedian and leader of the Servant of the People political party Vladimir Zelensky will face incumbent President Pyotr Poroshenko in the runoff race set for April 21. Zelensky won more than 30% of the vote, almost twice as much as Poroshenko, who garnered nearly 16%.
