Zelensky’s victory in first round boosts his presidential chances to 75%, says expert
With some 61% of the vote counted, Zelensky leads the race, winning 30.39%
KIEV, April 1. /TASS/. Showman and head of the Servant of the People political party Vladimir Zelensky, who has reached the runoff presidential election, has a 75-percent chance of becoming the next Ukrainian president, Head of the Ukrainian Institute for Analysis and Political Management Ruslan Bortnik told TASS.
"This is Zelensky’s strategic victory, with the likelihood of 75% it makes him the next head of state," the political scientist said.
Meanwhile, Poroshenko won a "tactical victory" by reaching the runoff election since he managed to outperform the leader of the Batkivshchyna (Fatherland) party Yulia Timoshenko, thereby extending his stay in power for another month and significantly improving his positions in the run-up to the October parliamentary polls, Bortnik noted.
According to the expert, voters supported Zelensky "as they are deeply disappointed with traditional politicians, and their programs and promises which are not fulfilled all the time." Oligarchs backed Zelensky "over their fear of Poroshenko and hopes that the showman will become the last Ukrainian president before Ukraine switches to a parliamentary system."
With 61.35% of the vote counted, Zelensky leads the race, winning 30.39% of the vote. Incumbent President Pyotr Poroshenko comes in second with 16.37%. The runoff election is scheduled for April 21.
