The US draft resolution on Venezuela calls for "the start of a peaceful political process leading to free, fair, and credible presidential elections"
UNITED NATIONS, February 27. /TASS/. The United States have submitted a draft resolution on Venezuela to the UN Security Council, and the vote on it will be held on Thursday, a source in the UN told TASS on Wednesday.
"The vote is planned to be held on Thursday," the source said.
The draft resolution calls for "the start of a peaceful political process leading to free, fair, and credible presidential elections," and stresses "the need to prevent further deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Venezuela and to facilitate unhindered access and delivery of assistance to all in need in the entirety of the territory of Venezuela in accordance with humanitarian principles."
The draft resolution "supports the peaceful restoration of democracy and rule of law in Venezuela; requests the Secretary-General utilize his good offices to help ensure free, fair, and credible presidential elections, and encourages subsequent peaceful, inclusive, and credible initiatives to address the prolonged crisis in the country."
The document also "stresses the importance of ensuring the security of all members of the National Assembly, and members of the political opposition."
Earlier reports said that Russia prepared an alternative draft resolution that calls on the sides to enter talks on the basis of the Montevideo mechanism. Russian representatives did not comment on whether the draft resolution will be submitted to UNSC for voting.
