Moldovan president warns of possible destabilization attempts ahead of election
According to opinion polls, the Party of Socialists that backs the president can secure about half of the seats in the future parliament
CHISINAU, February 19./TASS/. Moldovan president Igor Dodon warned on Tuesday about the danger of destabilization of the situation in the country ahead of the parliamentary election on Sunday, February 24.
"Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are the days when the institution of the president may come under attack, a blow can be dealt at one of the parties that can be removed from the election. We will have no other way out but to flock to the square to declare the election invalid," the president said in an online conference on Odnoklassniki social network.
He explained this fears by the decision of the parliament to meet for a session on Thursday. "Why are they doing this two days before the election? If they decide to remove one or two political forces, we have no options," Dodon said. "When I make a call, it is necessary to have dozens of thousands at the presidential administration," the president said.
According to opinion polls, the opposition Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova that backs the president can secure about half of the seats in the future parliament. The other seats will be shared among the pro-European Democratic Party of Moldova, as well as the opposition electoral bloc Acum, which brings together the pro-European Party of Action and Solidarity and the Dignity and Truth Platform Party.
Dodon disagrees with the activity of the pro-European majority in the parliament in domestic policy as well foreign policy issues. He comes out in favor of balanced relations between the East and the West, and seeks restoration of ties with Russia, while Prime Minister Pavel Filip has advised officials against visiting it for security reasons. In December last year, the president declared creation of a national movement in support of the president. In January 2019 he met with its activists, represented mainly by military retirees.
