Putin, Merkel exchange views on Syria

According to the Kremlin, the sides voiced their readiness to boost efforts in order to broker a political solution in close cooperation with the UN

MOSCOW, January 9. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel exchanged views on Syria in a telephone conversation and voiced their readiness to back a political process there in close cooperation with the United Nations, the Kremlin said on Wednesday.

"Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation with German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel. [They] exchanged views on the situation in Syria, including the formation of a constitutional committee on the basis of the agreements achieved at the four-way summit (Russia, Turkey, Germany and France) in Istanbul on October 27, 2018," the statement said.

"[They] voiced their readiness to boost efforts in order to broker a political solution in close cooperation with the United Nations, pursuing a goal of a long-term solution to the Syria crisis," the Kremlin said.
