Israel PM says he is in constant contact with Moscow and Washington on situation in Syria
According to Benjamin Netanyahu, the Defense Minister and the Chief-of-Staff are in similar contact with their counterparts in both the US and Russia
TEL AVIV, July 1. /TASS/. Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that he is in constant contact with Moscow and Washington regarding the events in Syria, according to Prime Minister’s office.
"I am in continual contact with the White House and the Kremlin on this matter. The Defense Minister and the Chief-of-Staff are in similar contact with their counterparts in both the US and Russia," Netanyahu said according to his office.
"Regarding southern Syria, we will continue to defend our borders. We will extend humanitarian assistance to the extent of our abilities. We will not allow entry into our territory and we will demand that the 1974 Separation of Forces Agreement with the Syrian army be strictly upheld," the statement said.
Israel took control over the Golan Heights that had belonged by Syria from 1944 after the Six-Day War in 1967. In 1981, Israel’s Knesset (parliament) passed a law on the Golan Heights unilaterally proclaiming Israel’s sovereignty over this territory. United Nations Security Council Resolution 497 of December 17, 1981 ruled that the annexation was null and void, having no international legal effect.
Not far from the border with Israel, the Syrian troops have been fighting since June 18 against terrorist group Jabhat al-Nusra (banned in Russia) and groups fighting with them to regain control over the southern province of Daraa. The Syrian government stated that terrorists and their accomplices impede conclusion of a reconciliation agreement in the southern regions of the country.
