Cuba declares national mourning for victims of air crash near Havana

A Boeing-737 leased by the Cuban air carrier Cubana de Aviacion from Mexico’s Global Air crashed one minute after leaving Havana’s airport

HAVANA, May 19. /TASS/. The Cuban authorities have declared national mourning for the victims of a Boeing-737 crash near Havana, the State Council said.

"In connection with Friday’s air crash the State Council declares official mourning from 06:00 of May 19 to 00:00 of May 21," the statement runs. Flags across the nation will be flying at half-mast.

A Boeing-737 leased by the Cuban air carrier Cubana de Aviacion from Mexico’s Global Air crashed one minute after leaving Havana’s airport. The liner was to make a domestic flight to Holguin with more than 100 passengers and crew on board. Almost of them reportedly died.

The plane crashed on farmland between the airport and Santiago de las Vegas approximately 20 kilometers south of Havana.
