Trump announces US withdrawal from Iran nuclear deal
Donald Trump warned that economic sanctions against Iran would follow shortly
WASHINGTON, May 8. /TASS/. The United States is pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal and will re-impose economic sanctions on Iran, US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday.
"I am announcing today that the United States will withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal," Trump said, adding that he will sign a memorandum to reinstate sanctions on Iran. "In a few moments, I will sign a presidential memorandum to begin reinstating US nuclear sanctions on the Iranian regime. We will be instituting the highest level of economic sanctions."
He did not specify however what he meant by saying "the highest level of economic sanctions," but warned that the US could impose sanctions on any country helping Iran on its nuclear weapons program.
"This was a horrible one-sided deal that should have never, ever been made. It didn't bring calm. It didn't bring peace. And it never will," Trump said and accused Iran of supporting terrorist groups in the Middle East.
The US leader signed the memorandum immediately after his speech.
The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), known as the deal on Iran’s nuclear program, was signed between Iran and six international mediators (the United Kingdom, Germany, China, Russia, the United States, and France) on July 14, 2015. On January 16, 2016, the parties to the deal announced beginning of its implementation. Under the deal, Iran undertakes to curb its nuclear activities and place them under total control of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in exchange of abandonment of the sanctions imposed previously by the United Nations Security Council, the European Union and the United States over its nuclear program.
