Armenian opposition leader in talks with ruling coalition's ex-members
On April 23, Serzh Sargsyan resigned as the country’s prime minister
YEREVAN, April 27. /TASS/. Armenian opposition leader Nikol Pashinyan has stated that he met with representatives of the Dashnaktsutyun party.
"Yesterday evening I met with Dashnaktsutyun party representatives. I discussed the current situation and ways to settle it with Armen Rustamyan and Arsen Ambartsumyan," Pashinyan wrote on Facebook on Friday.
On April 25, Dashnaktsutyun stated that it is withdrawing from the ruling coalition with the Republican Party of Armenia.
Armenia’s PM refuses to hold talks
Armenia’s Acting Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan has refused to hold negotiations with opposition leader Nikol Pashinyan in the presence of reporters, Karapetyan’s press secretary Aram Araratyan said on Friday.
Pashinyan earlier called on Karapetyan to hold negotiations on Friday. The opposition leader insists that the media should be admitted to the meeting.
"Karen Karepetyan still believes that negotiations would be futile in the presence of reporters," Araratyan said in the statement. He noted that, according to the acting prime minister, Pashinyan should accept President Armen Sarkisyan’s proposal to hold a general discussion of the situation in the country and ways to settle it with participation of all parliamentary and non-parliamentary forces.
On April 23, Serzh Sargsyan resigned as the country’s prime minister under the pressure of the opposition. An election of the new cabinet of ministers is due on May 1. It will be held at the parliament as an open voting.
The opposition demands Pashinyan’s election as the new head of government. The ruling Republican Party of Armenia agreed to an early parliamentary election, but considers the opposition’s demand to elect its leader as prime minister as anti-constitutional.
