Armenia’s opposition vows to launch second round of revolution
The opposition movement should do everything in its power to enable the process to bring about a real change, the opposition's leader said
YEREVAN, April 26. /TASS/. Armenian opposition has taken a strategic decision to launch a second round of the revolution, national parliament deputy Nikol Pashinyan, who leads the country’s political opposition forces said on Thursday.
"I’ve just rounded up a meeting with my allies and we took a strategic decision regarding a second round of the velvet revolution," he said. "The opposition movement should do everything in its power to enable the process to bring about a real change."
"We’ll make public all our decisions at a meeting on Republic Square tonight," Pashinyan said.
Armenian Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan resigned on April 23 under pressure from the opposition. The national Constitution says the parliamentary caucuses can nominate their candidates for the prime minister’s position within seven days after the resignation.
After that, a new prime minister is elected in parliament by open balloting.
The opposition demands that a ‘candidate from the grassroots’ become the next prime minister. The ruling Republican Party has given consent to an early parliamentary election but it dismisses the demands to make the opposition forces’ leader the next prime minister as unconstitutional ones.
The parliament is to elect the prime minister on May 1.
