Legendary Soviet hockey coach Tikhonov dies at 84

Tikhonov led the USSR national team to gold medals at three straight Olympic Games in 1984, 1988 and 1992

MOSCOW, November 24. /TASS/. Viktor Tikhonov who coached the Soviet ice hockey team in the 1970s and 1980s has died in Moscow at the age of 84, the press service of the CSKA hockey club said on Monday.

Tikhonov led the national team to gold medals at three straight Olympic Games in 1984, 1988 and 1992 and and wom eight world ice hockey championships as a coach.

He also led CSKA Moscow to 13 consecutive Soviet championships (1977-1989) and 13 consecutive European Cup titles.

Tikhonov ended his career in 2004.

The International Ice Hockey Federation called Tikhonov "one of international hockey's most successful coaches of all time.

The legendary coach is in the IIHF Hall of Fame.
