SOCHI, September 19. /ITAR-TASS/. The successful outcome of the organized in Russia 2014 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games was the result of the “very difficult, tense and responsible work” done a huge team of people, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said on Friday.

“It was quite a festivity and we organized it at a very high level,” Medvedev said at the state awarding ceremony for organizers of the 2014 Winter Olympics.

The Russian prime minister said that the successful organization of the global sports event was the result of work of a huge team, which also included athletes, coaches, construction workers and journalists.

“This is the success of the whole big team, of all different people,” Medvedev said adding that during the days of the Olympics in Sochi the whole country rejoined in a unique emotional uplift.

According to Medvedev the success of the Olympic Games organization and the national team’s performance led to an incomparable sense of pride, but unfortunately, he said, tragic events in Russia’s neighboring Ukraine began developing rapidly following the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“We would have preferred to relish the success [at the Olympics] a bit longer,” Medvedev said.

In February and March, the Russian resort city of Sochi hosted the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, which, according to international sports officials, athletes and visitors, were organized at the highest level possible and provided up-to-date infrastructure at all levels.

Commenting on the organization of the Olympics in Russia, Thomas Bach, the president of the International Olympic Committee, said in February that he was very satisfied with the way the Games unfolded.

“I’ve been speaking to many, many athletes and haven’t heard a single complaint. They know that the best stage has been prepared for the best athletes in the world, so I’m really happy,” Bach said at that time.

The 2014 Sochi Games were also the first Winter Olympics since 1952 when the Games’ hosting country won the highest overall number of awards as well as the biggest number of gold medals. Team Russia finished the 2014 Olympics with the overall result of 33 won medals (13 gold, 11 silver and 9 bronze medals) surpassing its previous Winter Olympics record of 11 gold medals, set at the 1994 Winter Games in Norway’s Lillehammer.
