Security measures at Maracana stadium stepped up after Chile fans storm it
Chile fans were all without tickets and sought to get to the stand
RIO DE JANEIRO, June 19 /ITAR-TASS/. Security measures at Brazil Maracana stadium’s press centre will be stepped up after some 100 Chilean soccer fans stormed it one hour before a Spain v Chile match, causing some damage, the press service of the FIFA World Cup’s organizing committee told Tass.
They were all without tickets and sought to get to the stand. It took the security service about half-an-hour to restore the normal functioning of the press centre. Furniture was overturned in the premises. About 30 violators were detained, and the rest were expelled from the stadium.
Security service staffers told Tass that a group of fans started getting together at Maracana, host of the 2014 World Cup and one of the largest soccer stadiums in the world, at about 11 am local time, hoping to get tickets. When no hope was left, they decided to storm the media centre. One of the fans pretended he felt unwell, putting security guards off their guard and letting the fans break into the stadium.
None of the journalists was injured, but the entrance door was smashed, some tables and chairs were damaged.
