The Brazilian authorities confiscated 39 kg (86 lbs) of the spread

MOSCOW, June 18. /ITAR-TASS/. Some Uruguayan fans put the blame for the defeat of their national team at the 2014 World Cup opener in Brazil on the lack of caramel spread, which is the team’s favorite treat that was earlier confiscated by the Brazilian customs services, British media reported on Wednesday.

According to a BBC report, the Brazilian authorities confiscated 39 kg (86 lbs) of the spread, known as dulche de leche, from the team Uruguay upon their arrival for the World Cup, which runs between June 12 and July 13.

The Brazilian authorities said the caramel spread contained milk ingredients and in line with the customs’ regulations all dairy products must have a special certification, which the Uruguayan team lacked.

Deprived of their favored South American confection, made of slowly heated and sweetened milk, the Uruguayan squad jump started their World Cup campaign with the 1-3 defeat to Costa Rica on June 14.

It was not immediately clear whether the South American team brought the caramel threat in a single batch or it was stuffed in multiple jars, but chances of getting the confection back during the global tournament are too slim, according to Reuters.

The news agency quoted an official with the Brazilian Agriculture Department as saying that the Uruguayan team can get the caramel spread "as soon as they can produce the necessary documents or they can pick it up on their way out of Brazil.”

BBC cited Former Uruguay goalkeeper Juan Castillo as saying that the national team had no problems at all bringing dulche de leche for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where the Uruguayans were stopped on their run for the title in the semifinal match by the Netherlands 2-3.

Speculations whether the lack of dulche de leche influences the Uruguayan team’s performance in Brazil will be tested in the nearest future, namely on Thursday, during their Group D match against England at the Arena Corinthians in Sao Paolo.
