RIO DE JANEIRO, June 17. /ITAR-TASS/. Effective play of the German national team, as well as a quick goal scored by American forward Clint Dempsey have marked the fifth day of the 2014 FIFA World Cup currently taking place in Brazil.

In a Group G match against Portugal, the German team has shown that it came to the world championship to claim only gold, and the 4:0 score is a brilliant proof to it. Although both teams seemed titans in terms of lineup, there was no epic fight. In the first time, the spectators saw the massacre of the innocent instead.

The Portuguese team led by the two-fold Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo, who managed to completely recover ahead of the tournament, could not counter with the German squad that seemed a combat machine. The Germans took to the field without any pronounced forward, but this affected neither the strength of their attack nor their performance. On the 12th minute, the score was opened: Mario Götze earned a penalty in a fight with João Pereira, which was precisely converted by Thomas Müller. The second goal came 20 minutes after, when Mats Hummels made a headshot straight to the goal net after the ball was served from the corner, making the score 2:0.

The Portuguese obviously lost heart after that. In particular, Real Madrid’s guard Pepe let the team down by receiving a direct red card on the 37th minute for foul play and a hit into Müller’s face that followed. The Germans, steamed up by such behavior of the rivals, continued with even more attacks on the goalposts of the opponents. Thus, the score became significant even before the break. In the minutes added to the first time, Müller got advantage of the mistake made by ex-guard of Zenit Bruno Alves and scored a double — 3:0. In effect, the game was done.

The situation did not change in the second time. The Germans returned the lead to the rivals, and the latter tried to go forward and attack, but made this mostly mechanically. Germany’s counter-attacks looked far more dangerous. In this situation, the fourth goal into the Portuguese posts was just a question of time. On the 78th minute, Thomas Müller made a hat trick on this tournament by setting the final score in the match — 4:0. He was recognized as the best player of the match.

In another game, national teams of Iran and Nigeria could not determine the winner in a Group F match and left the score unopened —0:0.

Teams of Ghana and USA met in the third match of the day. American forward Clint Dempsey became the central figure by opening the score on the 29th second. At the last moment, the African team managed to even the score. André Ayew scored a goal on the 82th minute. However, the Americans did not want to miss the victory in their first match, and on the 86th minute, John Brooks delivered a goal with a headshot, making the score 2:1.

Dempsey’s precise shot ranked fifth in the list of the quickest goals in the history of world championships. He was outpaced by Hakan Şükür of Turkey (11th second, 2002 FIFA World Cup), Václav Mašek of Czechoslovakia (15th second, 1962 World Cup), Germany’s Ernst Lehner (25th second, 1934 World Cup) and Brit Bryan Robson (27th second, 1982 World Cup).

Among the non-game events of the day a special place took visits of political figures to the matches of the world championship. Chancellor Angela Merkel watched the game between Germany and Portugal. Ahead of the match, Merkel held a meeting with Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, and then visited a children’s football tournament in Boca do Rio. Before her trip to Brazil, Merkel made a statement saying that by her visit, she wished to support the national team, as well as gratitude to the hosting country.

The Ghana – USA match was marked by an unpleasant incident. Protesters in the city of Natal burned the star-spangled banner near the Arena das Dunas stadium, where the match was to take place. This game was visited by US Vice President Joe Biden.

The Russian squad has arrived in Cuiaba, where it will play against South Korea overnight to June 18 (June 17, 22:00 GMT). Fabio Capello’s team had the last training ahead of the match involving all the 23 footballers, as well as Denis Cheryshev, who is not included in the lineup.

In addition, Russia’s head coach announced the captain in the game against South Korea. It will be PFC CSKA Moscow’s guard Boris Berezutsky. Capello also pledged that the Russian team would brilliantly perform at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
