Russian team captain to skip 2014 World Cup

Roman Shirokov was injured on April 24, he will have a surgery June 9

MOSCOW, June 06. /ITAR-TASS /. A captain of the Russian Football Roman Shirokov will not play at the World Cup. He will have a surgery June 9, the chief coach of the Russian team Fabio Capello told at a conference after a friendly game with the Moroccans (2:0).

Zenit FC midfielder last time participated in an official game on April 24. He limped off the field in the 54th minute of the meeting with Moscow Locomotive because of Achilles tendon injury. Shirokov didn’t take part in friendly games the Russian team held in preparation for the world championship with teams of Slovakia (1:0, May 26), Norway (1:1, May 31) and Morocco.

The Russian team will go to Brazil in the evening on June 7.

The national team will play against South Korea (June 18, Cuiaba), Belgium (June 22, Rio de Janeiro) and Algeria (June 27, Curitiba) in the group stage of the World Cup.
