Winner of marathon in Argentina's Cordoba dies on podium

The amateur athlete, aged 27, felt sick during the prize-giving ceremony and died despite the efforts of medics to resuscitate him

BUENOS AIRES, April 21. /ITAR-TASS/. In Argentina, the winner of the 21km marathon has died at the podium right after winning the race, local media reported on Sunday.

The tragedy happened in the city of Cordoba, where nearly 500 runners participated in the marathon. The amateur athlete, aged 27, felt sick during the prize-giving ceremony and died despite the efforts of medics to resuscitate him.

One of the organizers of the event Jacinto Prado told reporters that three emergency brigades were supervising the marathon. One of the brigades was at the finish line, but medics were unable to do anything. Prado also said that two other athletes needed medical help and were taken to hospital, but their lives are not at risk.

Prado noted that such situations occured when amateur athletes participate in the marathon will little or insufficient training and preparation.
