Russian national team on the sledge hockey won Paralympic Games silver in Sochi

SOCHI, March 15, 21:42 /ITAR-TASS/. Reigning Paralympic ice sledge hockey champions team USA grabbed the gold of the 2014 Winter Paralympic Games in Russia’s Sochi after defeating the hosting team Russia 1-0 in the final match on Saturday night.

The scoreless draught after the first period was opened by US forward Joshua Sweeney with some six minutes remaining of the playing time in the second period.

The 7,000-seat Shayba Arena was mostly packed with fans of the Russian team, but some of the arena’s sectors were occupied by US team supporters, who were waving American national flags.

Thousands of Russian spectators were constantly chanting ‘Rossiya! Rossiya!’ (Russia! Russia!) and ‘Shayba! Shayba!’ (Puck! Puck!).

According to statistics from the organizers, a total of 6,825 spectators attended the final of the ice sledge hockey match on Saturday night.

Speedy US and Russian teams clashed again on Saturday night after the hosting team skated away with a 2-1 win over the two-time and reigning Paralympic champions USA in their Group B game on Tuesday.
