SOCHI, February 15. /ITAR-TASS/. Russian freestyler Maria Komissarova, who received a severe spinal injury, is in stable severe condition and alert, the official website of Russia’s Freestyle Federation reported.

February 15, Komissarova was injured while training. Chief physician of Russia’s Freestyle Federation Mirzali Samedov said that the athlete was rushed from the stadium to a hospital, where a decision was made to immediately carry out a surgery.

 

What diagnosis made the physicians

Later, physicians of the hospital #8 of the Krasnaya Polyana operated on her. In the course of the surgery, the preliminary diagnosis was confirmed: displaced dorsal vertebra fracture. The surgery lasted for six and a half hours. The physicians recovered the fractured part of the spine and implanted a metal piece.

“Maria’s condition is critical, she is alert,” the Federation reports. “A forecast for the future may be discussed not earlier than in three or four days. Apparently, in some two weeks she will undergo another surgery on the spine, a rehabilitating one.”

It was noted that Komissarova cannot be transferred to another hospital immediately after the operation. A rehabilitation period should pass, and then she will be transferred to one of the Moscow hospitals or any other medical treatment facility with a big experience in curing this type of trauma. “In Russia or abroad,” the message specifies.

Mirzali Samedov added that physicians of the hospital in Krasnaya Polyana brilliantly coped with the surgery. “Their knowledge, abilities and efficient response became a key factor in the surgery’s success,” he noted.

 

Previous trauma

In the previous season, the skier injured cruciate ligaments of knee. The rehabilitation period took six months. In August, when resuming trainings, Maria noted that she did not feel any pain anymore.

Komissarova was to participate in ski cross competitions, which are scheduled for February 20-21.
