MOSCOW, August 24. /TASS/. The Council of World Chess (FIDE) has decided not to allow Russian players to participate in the 2026 World Chess Olympiad, Executive Director of the Russian Chess Federation (RCF) Alexander Tkachyov told TASS on Monday.

"Our national teams will not be playing at the World Chess Olympiad. At the suggestion of FIDE Interim President [Viswanathan] Anand this decision was endorsed by the Council," Tkachyov stated.

"Fortunately, there are people who put the game above political issues and worry about their own careers. But there are also people who put their personal interests above and at the moment they prevail in the Council. They won this time," he added.

The FIDE press service earlier stated to TASS that the Russian men's and women's national teams would not be taking part in the 46th World Chess Olympiad. Later, Arkady Dvorkovich, who had previously suspended the powers of the FIDE president, said that on August 23 the FIDE Council would consider the issue of admitting the Russian national teams to the Olympiad.

The 2026 World Chess Olympiad will take place on September 16-27 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
