BUENOS AIRES, August 9. /TASS/. Russian swimmer Vladislav Sapozhnikov has set the world record during the 200 meters breaststroke race at the 2026 Winter Swimming World Cup in Argentina.

"I have set the world record for age category of 25-29 years. It used to be 2:43:73, and now it’s 2:35:60," he told TASS.

In all, Sapozhnikov won 10 medals during the event - five gold, three silver and two bronze.

Along with Sapozhnikov, Russia was represented at the competition by Alexey Zharkov, Pyotr Yasinsky, Matvey Ovseichuk and Vasilisa Malayeva as they have been cleared to compete under the national flag and to the tune of the country’s anthem.

In total, the Russian national team won 20 gold and 7 silver medals during the event, with its members finishing at the podium in every discipline where Russia participated.

The tournament, which ran from August 4 until August 8, included events ranging from 25 to 450 meters in distance in the waters of the Perito Moreno Glacier. Water temperature was near the freezing point, ranging between 1.5 and 2 degrees Centigrade.

On April 13, 2026, the world’s governing body of swimming sports, World Aquatics (formerly known as FINA), lifted all previously imposed sanctions against Russia and Belarus, allowing their athletes to compete again under the countries’ flags and to the tune of national anthems.
