Russia’s Andreeva roams into 2026 French Open semis with straight-sets win over Cirstea
The 2026 French Open takes place in Paris between May 24 and June 7
PARIS, June 2. /TASS/. Russian teen Mirra Andreeva stormed into the semifinals of the 2026 French Open on Tuesday as she defeated Romania’s Sorana Cirstea in straight sets.
In just 56 minutes, the 8th-seeded Andreeva, who is playing under a neutral status at the tournament, breezed past her 18th-seeded opponent from Romania 6-0; 6-3.
"I'm super happy that I'm going to be playing in semis again," the tournament’s official website quoted Andreeva as saying after the match.
Andreeva seems to like playing at Roland Garros. Two years ago, as a 17-year-old, she reached the semifinals of the 2024 French Open, previously her best finish ever at a Grand Slam.
"Super happy with how I was playing today. I felt like it was one of my best matches so far this tournament. Super happy to be back in semis," she continued. "It was a great match with Sorana. So I'm just super happy about the win today."
Speaking about her relatively easy win over Cirstea today, Andreeva said "I honestly didn't expect that myself."
"I don't know, I just found myself being very, very focused, very aggressive, going for my shots all the time. I don't know what happened, but I was just, like, in the zone, I guess. Sorana is, as I said, a very tough opponent to play against, so I'm just happy about the win today," she stated.
The Russian tennis star is now set to face off in the next round against Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk (15th-seed), who in the other quarterfinals match of the tournament defeated her compatriot Elina Svitolina (7th-seed) 6-3; 2-6; 6-2.
Speaking about her potential opponent in the semifinals before learning that it would be Kostyuk, Andreeva said that both Ukrainians are "amazing players, amazing fighters. I've played against both of them already this year, so I kind of know what to expect."
"Obviously, there are no easy opponents, especially when you're going to be playing the semifinal of a Grand Slam. Whoever wins, I think we're just going to try to prepare my best. I'm just going to try to do everything I can on the court, fight, and we'll see. The better player will win," the Russian player added.
Andreeva, 19, is currently 8th in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Rankings and she is a five-time WTA champion. Her best finish at Grand Slams was at the 2024 French Open when she reached the semifinals. In 2023, the WTA named Andreeva rookie of the year. Playing at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, she won a silver medal in women’s doubles paired with Diana Shnaider.
One of tennis’ four Grand Slam events, the 2026 French Open takes place in Paris, nicknamed the "City of Light," between May 24 and June 7. The tournament is played on outdoor clay courts at the Stade Roland Garros. Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Coco Gauff from the United States are the tournament’s reigning champions on the men's and women's sides respectively.
