Current WADA chief Banka to run unopposed in organization’s presidential election
Elections for the WADA president and vice president are scheduled to be held via an online vote of the organization’s Board of Directors on May 29
OTTAWA, March 31. /TASS/. Incumbent President of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Witold Banka will be the only candidate on the ballot for president in the agency's May election, WADA’s press office said in a statement on Monday.
"The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is pleased to announce the candidates for the election of the Agency’s independent President and Vice-President," the statement reads.
"The individuals elected will serve as President and Vice-President of the Agency’s Foundation Board (Board), and Chair and Vice-Chair of the Agency’s Executive Committee (ExCo), playing an integral role on both of these key decision-making bodies."
"There is one candidate standing for election of the President," the statement reads. "Incumbent WADA President, Witold Banka, submitted his application for re-election and his dossier has been submitted to the [WADA Executive] Board."
According to WADA, "There is one candidate standing for election of the Vice-President. Incumbent WADA Vice-President, Yang Yang [of China], submitted her application for re-election and her dossier has been submitted to the Board."
Elections for the WADA president and vice president are scheduled to be held via an online vote of the organization’s Board of Directors on May 29.
"The election will take place during a virtual Foundation Board meeting on Thursday 29 May 2025. The independent President and the independent Vice-President must be elected by a two-thirds majority of the votes (including blank votes) cast by the Board members present at the time of the vote," the statement added.
In November 2019, Polish Sports and Tourism Minister Witold Banka was elected the president of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). He assumed his post on January 1, 2020 replacing Britain’s Sir Graig Reedie, who served as the president of WADA for the previous six years.
Banka, 40, is a former track and field athlete with experience in the World Championships and Summer Olympic Games. He was appointed the Minister of Sports and Tourism of Poland in 2015.
