IOC to decide on Russian athletes’ participation in 2024 Olympics in March — head
Thomas Bach said, that the IOC is in favor of the participation of Russian athletes who have not explicitly supported the invasion of Ukraine
MOSCOW, December 2. /TASS/. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will decide on the participation of Russian athletes in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris in March, IOC President Thomas Bach said, as quoted by Inside the Games.
"We will take into account the recent UN decision on this case, which calls for an Olympic truce and supports the IOC’s approach," he said. "The IOC is in favor of the participation of Russian athletes who have not explicitly supported the invasion of Ukraine, who are not in the army and who are willing to compete under a neutral flag."
"Depending on what is heard at this Olympic Summit, the IOC Executive Board will make a decision in the coming months, which means at its meeting in March," Bach added.
In late March, 2023, the IOC recommended to permit individual athletes from Russia and Belarus to take part in international sports tournaments, but only under certain conditions. Specifically, athletes from the two countries should not be "actively supporting" Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine and must compete under a neutral status. Russia and Belarus were also banned from participating in international team events.
The 2024 Summer Olympic Games will be hosted by the French capital of Paris between July 26 and August 11. Russia and Belarus did not receive invitations to the Olympics in due time.
