MOSCOW, March 1. /TASS/. Legendary French footballer Just Fontaine, who was celebrated for scoring a record number of goals during a single FIFA World Cup championship, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 89, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported, citing the athlete’s family.

According to AFP, Fontaine netted 30 goals over 21 match appearances between 1953 and 1960 for France’s national team, nicknamed ‘Les Bleus’ (The Blues).

The French forward led the team to their first ever semifinal at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, netting 13 goals in six matches to set the record for most goals scored during a single World Cup.

"He will forever be remembered for scoring 13 goals at that championship, a remarkable feat that seems unlikely ever to be matched," AFP noted.
