Lawmaker welcomes IPC’s decision to allow Russian paralympians to compete in Beijing
The Beijing Paralympic Games will be held on March 4-13
MOSCOW, March 2. /TASS/. The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) made an adequate decision by allowing Russian Paralympians to participate in the Beijing Games, Chairman of the State Duma (the lower house of parliament) Committee on Physical Culture and Sports Dmitry Svishchev told TASS.
The IPC announced on Wednesday that Russian and Belarusian Paralympians "will participate as neutrals at the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games, they will compete under the Paralympic flag."
"It is an adequate decision," Svishchev pointed out. "The decision was made despite all the international hysteria around our athletes. Even though our athletes won’t be able to compete under our country’s flag, they will still have the chance to prove themselves, which is what we expect them to do," he added.
"I think that the move to bar our Paralympians from participating in the Games would have been a true crime against sports," the lawmaker added.
The Beijing Paralympic Games will be held on March 4-13. As many as 78 medal sets will be up for grabs.
