AMSTERDAM, March 2. /TASS/. The Executive Committee of the Union of European Football Association (UEFA) has decided to award the Russian city of Kazan the right to host the 2023 UEFA Super Cup match, the UEFA press service said in a statement on Monday.

Last year, the Russian Football Union (RFU) proposed Kazan as a venue to host the UEFA Super Cup either in the year 2022 or 2023.

"The 2022 UEFA Super Cup will be contested at Finland's Helsinki Olympic Stadium with the UEFA Executive Committee selecting Russia's Kazan Arena as the venue for the 2023 decider," the statement from UEFA’s press service reads. "Neither Helsinki nor Kazan have staged a major UEFA men’s final before."

According to the UEFA statement, "Kazan Arena is home to Rubin Kazan, who won the 2008 and 2009 Russian Premier League titles."

"The venue first opened in 2013, in time to stage the Summer Universiade, and was then chosen as one of the venues for the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals, staging six games including France’s 4-3 win against Argentina in the round of 16, and Belgium's 2-1 quarter-final defeat of Brazil," the statement added.

Alexey Sorokin, the head of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) Russia-2020 and a member of the UEFA Executive Committee, told TASS that the committee had no questions whatsoever regarding the organizational capabilities of Kazan to host the annual landmark football match.

"There was no usual voting since two other candidate cities withdrew their bids and only two bidding cities remained to be selected for the next two years," Sorokin said. "Everything was settled very quickly."

Sorokin added that the Russian city of Kazan "has a vast experience of hosting various large-scale international sports events, therefore it was pleasant to hear that there were no issues at all regarding the organizational issues."

"Kazan is a very good city with an experienced team on the organization of tournaments and with a good stadium, however, it must still get to work on preparing for this event," Sorokin continued.

"It is obvious that nobody is currently ready to host the Super Cup, because it is a very serious match, which requires months of preparations," he said. "The organizational requirements for this match are much higher compared to hosting matches of the [Russian] Premier League."

The UEFA Super Cup is an official event, which precedes the opening of the European football tournament. The UEFA Super Cup is a one-match tournament and the Super Cup is contested by the winning clubs of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League. The Stade Louis II Arena in Monaco was the permanent venue for the annual UEFA Super Cup matches between 1998 and 2012.

In 2012, the UEFA ruled against holding Super Cups at the permanent venue, i.e. at the Stade Louis II Arena in Monaco, and based on filed applications the organization started searching for new venues to host the landmark football tournament. Since 2013, the UEFA Super Cup matches have been played at stadiums across Europe. Russia has never hosted any of them.

In 2020, the Estadio do Dragao in Porto, Portugal, will stage the season-opener, while Windsor Park in Belfast, Northern Ireland, will host the 2021 UEFA Super Cup.
