Russia’s UFC Champ Nurmagomedov seeks boxing bout in Moscow with legendary Mayweather
Nurmagomedov said that he had discussed the issue of the fight with Umar Kremlev, the secretary general of the Boxing Federation of Russia
MOSCOW, October 23. /TASS/. Russia’s UFC Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov discussed a possibility of holding a bout in in the country’s capital of Moscow against US boxer Floyd Mayweather, the Russian fighter wrote in his Instagram account.
Nurmagomedov stated that he had discussed the issue of the fight with Umar Kremlev, the secretary general of the Boxing Federation of Russia (BFR). US boxer Mayweather announced earlier that he was ready to square off with Nurmagomedov for a bout, but the boxing regulations.
"We have discussed [with Kremlev] the fight with Mayweather," Nurmagomedov wrote in his Instagram account. "We would like it to be held at the legendary Luzhniki Arena in Moscow."
"I am sure that we will manage to pack an audience of 100,000 [at the Luzhniki Arena] and will set a world record of pay-per-view sales," Khabib Nurmagomedov stated. "The most important is that my father will be in the corner since no travel visa required for him to come to Moscow."
UFC Champion Nurmagomedov defeated Ireland’s Conor McGregor during the UFC 229 tournament in Las Vegas on the night of October 6, defending his lightweight title with a choke in the 4th round of the fight. The Russian fighter’s father and coach Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov was declined a US visa for Khabib’s fight in Las Vegas earlier this month.
US boxer Mayweather maintains an unblemished record of 50 wins in all his professional fights, including 27 wins by KOs. In August 2017, the 41-year-old American boxer, who goes by the alias ‘Money’ or ‘Pretty Boy,’ faced off Ireland’s McGregor and edged him out with the technical knockout in the 10th round.
Nurmagomedov’s victory over McGregor this month was his 11th in the UFC tournaments career. The Russian defeated his opponents in all of his 27 fights. The 30-year-old Nurmagomedov, hailing from Russia’s North Caucasus Region of Dagestan, was the first Russian to win the UFC champion title during the fight against his US opponent Al Iaquinta this April.
On April 8, Nurmagomedov defeated his US opponent Al Iaquinta in a five-round fight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight belt in New York.
Nurmagomedov became the first Russian to be awarded the UFC champion title. The 29-year-old Russian clinched the 26th victory in his career with no defeats, while Al Iaquinta suffered his fourth defeat with 13 victories and one draw.
