Cherchesov to remain Russian national football team’s head coach
Cherchesov took the helm of the Russian national football team in August 2016
MOSCOW, July 25. /TASS/. The head coach of Russia’s national football team, Stanislav Cherchesov, will maintain his position, First Vice-President of the Russian Football Union Nikita Simonyan told reporters.
Russia’s team led by Cherchesov, 54, achieved its best result in years at the recent FIFA World Cup that the country hosted for the first time ever. Russia beat Spain in their round of 16 match and made it into the quarter-final where it lost to Croatia 3-4 in penalty shootouts.
"Cherchesov will surely continue working [with the team]. When will a new contract be signed? This is a question for Alayev (the acting president of the Russian Football Union - TASS]," Simonyan said.
Cherchesov took the helm of the Russian national football team in August 2016. His current contract will expire in August 2018.
