IOC cuts out Russia, Belarus from list of European broadcasters for 2026-2032 Olympics

In all, the IOC granted the rights to broadcast the Olympic Games on the territory of Europe in 2026-2032 to 49 countries, with Russia and Belarus excluded from the list

MOSCOW, January 17. /TASS/. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has omitted Russia and Belarus from the list of the European countries granted the right to broadcast Olympic Games in the period of 2026-2032, according to the IOC statement released on Tuesday.

"The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today announced that all media rights in Europe for the four Olympic Games in the 2026-2032 period have been awarded to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and Warner Bros. Discovery," the statement reads.

The scheduled Games within this period include the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, the 2030 Winter Games (the host is still waiting to be announced this year), the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and the 2032 Summer Olympics in Australia’s Brisbane.

In all, the IOC granted the rights to broadcast the Olympic Games on the territory of Europe in 2026-2032 to 49 countries, with Russia and Belarus excluded from the list.

"Following the IOC’s launch of a competitive tender, the EBU and Warner Bros. Discovery presented a joint bid to acquire all media rights across 49 territories in Europe…," the IOC said in its a statement.

The rights to broadcast the Olympics on the territory of Russia previously belonged to Telesport, a major operator in sports marketing, and it had already inked a contract to air the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

In September 2022, Telesport President Pyotr Makarenko told TASS that his company had purchased a package of rights to air the 2026 Winter Games in Italy.

IOC’s sanctions against Russia, Belarus

On February 28, 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued recommendations to international sports federations to bar athletes from Russia and Belarus from taking part in international tournaments, citing Moscow’s special military operation in Ukraine as the reason.

Following the IOC’s recommendations in late February, the majority of global sports federations decided to bar athletes from Russia and Belarus from all international sports tournaments.

In mid-October, IOC President Thomas Bach announced that the Olympic body recommended keeping athletes from Russia and Belarus suspended from international sports tournaments.

On November 29, the IOC chief called once again on all international sports federations to follow the aforementioned recommendations and impose sanctions against athletes from Russia and Belarus.

Following the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Paris will host the Summer Games in 2024, while Los Angeles will host the event in 2028. In 2021, at the 138th IOC (the International Olympic Committee) session in Tokyo, Australia’s Brisbane was selected to host the 2032 Summer Olympic Games.
