US defeats Iran, proceeds into World Cup playoff

In another Group B match, England defeated Wales 3-0

DOHA, November 30. /TASS/. The United States won 1-0 over Iran on Tuesday night, proceeding into the playoff round of the 2020 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The only goal in the game was scored by Christian Pulisic on the 38th minute.

In another Group B match, England defeated Wales 3-0. The goals were scored by Marcus Rashford (50’, 68’) and Phil Foden (51’).

The victory brought England to the top spot in Group B with seven points, followed by the United States (5), Iran (3) and Wales (1).

In the last 16, England will take on Senegal on December 4, while the United States will play against the Netherlands on December 3.

Iran’s Tasnim news agency informed that the national football federation of Iran will request FIFA Ethics Committee to levy a ten-game suspension on the US team, effectively disqualifying it from the World Cup for "posting a distorted image of the flag of the Islamic Republic."

Prior to that, the official Twitter account of the US national team published the Group B schedule infographics, where the national flag of Iran was altered to remove the country’s emblem from it. The horizontal tricolor of green, white and red, with no symbols, is used by the country’s opposition and protestors.

The post was removed shortly after, and replaced with the correct version of the Iranian flag.

Iran has been gripped by protests since the funeral of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini on September 16. According to the official version, this Kurdish girl was detained by the police for not wearing her headscarf properly. During an interrogation, she suffered a heart attack and died. Social media, however, spread word that Amini had been beaten by police.
