MOSCOW, February 28. /TASS/. /TASS/. All Russian national teams and clubs have been suspended from participation in FIFA and UEFA competitions, the press service of the International Federation of Football Associations said in statement on Monday.
"These decisions were adopted today by the Bureau of the FIFA Council and the Executive Committee of UEFA, respectively the highest decision-making bodies of both institutions on such urgent matters," the press service said, adding that the suspension is linked to the current situation in Ukraine.
The move follows the International Olympic Committee’s recommendations to sports federations to ensure that no Russian or Belarusian athletes be allowed to take part in international events and to organize no competitions in Russia and Belarus.
The Russian national football team will not be able to take part in the 2022 World Cup playoff qualifiers scheduled for March.
The Russian Football Union (RFU) condemned the FIFA and UEFA sanctions as discriminating and "contradicting the norms and principles of international competitions," its press service said.
The suspension "affects a huge number of athletes, coaches, team and club staff and, first of all, millions of Russian and foreign fans whose interests should be protected by international sports federations in the first place."
Vyacheslav Koloskov, the RFU president emeritus and former FIFA vice president, told TASS that FIFA sanctions were imposed under the EU pressure and would "kill the Russian football."
The 2022 FIFA World Cup is set to take place in Qatar between November 21 and December 18.
