European boxing qualifiers for Olympics in Tokyo to be held in early June

The venue will be announced before March 1

MOSCOW, February 24. /TASS/. The European boxing qualification tournament for the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo will be held between June 4 and 8, Kirill Shchekutyev, the secretary general of the Russian Boxing Federation (RBF), told TASS on Wednesday.

"We received a letter yesterday and it stated that the European qualifying tournament would be organized on June 4-8, 2021," Shchekutyev said. "The venue will be announced before March 1."

"The world qualifying tournament will not be held and in this case qualified athletes will be determined based on their ratings. The details of this procedure will be announced later," he continued. "The European qualifying tournament will resume from the stage that was put on hold in London a year ago."

The 2020 Summer Olympics boxing qualifying competition - the European continental tournament - was scheduled to be hosted by London on March 13-23, 2020. However, the tournament was halted three days after its start, on March 16, over the ongoing global spread of the novel coronavirus.

The 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Japan’s Tokyo will be held between July 23 and August 8, 2021. In March 2020, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced a decision to postpone for one year the 2020 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games in Japan due to the continuous COVID-19 spread.
