MOSCOW, January 26. /TASS/. Biathlete Olga Podchufarova is intending to rejoin the Russian national team after her bid to obtain Slovenian citizenship failed, she revealed via her Instagram.
In October 2019, the Russian Biathlon Union approved Podchufarova’s transfer to the Slovenian team.
"As you know, I spent the last 18 months in Slovenia waiting an official permission to compete for the new country. But it turned out in such a way that I am now coming back home to Russia," she wrote. "Neither of the two sides expected this outcome. Without delving too much into details, the EU internal laws do not allow me to complete the citizenship procedure, which means that prospects to compete for the national team of this country zeroed out. All this story was a big challenge for me, I saw an experiment in this, my development and future growth. Of course, these developments dealt a blow below the waist for me and the Slovenian sporting federation because the initial prospects were totally different."
"Yes, I bet absolutely everything and this ‘absolutely everything’ fell through, now I am just trying to focus on my next steps. Indeed, during this time I only proved to myself that wherever I am and whatever the conditions around me are I just want to progress and become better in my favorite activity both as an athlete and a person. Therefore, I will continue my sporting career in Russia," Podchufarova added.
