MOSCOW, April 19. /TASS/. /TASS/. Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev defeated on Friday World’s No. 1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia in the quarterfinals match of the ATP Masters-1000 tennis tournament in Monte Carlo.
The 23-year-old Russian, seeded 10th at the tournament, was confident to win the first set against Djokovic, slumped to give away the following set, but rebounded in the third set to ink the final win of 6-3; 4-6, 6-2.
"He's got a very solid backhand," Djokovic was quoted as saying by the official ATP website after his match with Medvedev. "He doesn't make many mistakes from the backhand. He hits it very low with depth.
"A windy day like today, conditions are changing every single game. It's kind of tough to find the rhythm, and he doesn't give you much rhythm," Djokovic stated. "He improved his movement a lot since last year. He definitely deserves to be where he is."
Medvedev lost all of his three previous head-to-head encounters with the tennis legend Djokovic, but stunned the Serbian player on Friday to advance further to the semifinals round of the Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo.
In the semifinals of the tournament over this weekend, the Russian tennis star is set to play against another Serbian player, World’s No. 48, Dusan Lajovic, who confidently upset Lorenzo Sonego of Italy with straight sets win of 6-4; 7-5 in the quarterfinals round.
The annual tennis tournament ATP 1000 Monte Carlo runs on April 13-21 and offers 5.6 million Euro ($6.3 million) in prize money up for grabs.
